Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) result from an injury to the head that may affect a person's cognitive abilities, including learning and thinking skills. By understanding how the brain works and what happens to an individual when certain areas of the brain are injured, improved care can be provided.  

The learner will be able to:

• Explain how the brain functions
• Describe the different types of head injuries and the results of these injuries
• Discuss the care needs of a person with a brain injury and techniques to improve care and communication
• Describe the challenges for a person who has a brain injury
