Basic Review: Bathing, Dressing, Toileting, Oral Care and Personal Hygiene

Description

There are six basic activities of daily living, namely, bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, continence, and toileting. This course reviews the means and ways of personal hygiene, toileting, and continence, along with the benefits of establishing a routine for assisting residents.

Learner Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the six basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, continence, and toileting.
  2. Demonstrate proper techniques for personal hygiene care, including safe and respectful assistance with bathing and grooming.
  3. Explain best practices for assisting with toileting and managing continence, while maintaining dignity and infection control.
  4. Apply safe methods for transferring residents, promoting both caregiver and resident safety.
  5. Recognize the importance of promoting independence in residents during ADLs whenever possible.
  6. Understand the benefits of establishing consistent care routines to improve resident comfort, health outcomes, and quality of life.
  7. Practice communication and professionalism when assisting residents with sensitive daily care needs.
